Scheme – 1: Certified Welders’ Scheme

National Welding Training and Certification Scheme (NWTCS) of IIW-India have been developed by the Technical Committee with an objective to meet the demand of industry for welders, trained and certified to a level of competency as per IIWIC standards.

This scheme is specifically designed for large number of pre-school leaving candidates and dropouts who are unable to continue with formal education and provides an opportunity to build alternative career. The certification schemes under NWTCS will make the qualified welders & instructors better acceptable to industry all over India and open up opportunity and mobility throughout the country and even overseas.

To operate the scheme, IIW-India’s strategy is to provide details of prerequisites, curriculum and qualification testing requirements to the candidates at the enquiry stage so that the aspirant may accordingly prepare himself. Finally, when the candidate is ready to sit for the examination, the examinations are conducted by IIWIC at a suitable ATC by IIWIC authorized assessors / examiners as per IIWIC requirements. Successful candidates are awarded IIWIC certificate of competence.

Following are the schemes offered under NWTCS category by IIWIC:

Sl. No. Level of Certification Scheme Scheme Name Scheme Code

5 Industry Oriented Standard Scheme GMAW – Structural Welding GMAW-S
6 Industry Oriented Standard Scheme Boiler & Pressure Vessel Welding MMAW-P
7 Expert in Welding Expert Welder EW

Scheme – 2: Certified Welding Trainers’ Scheme

Training of Trainers (TOT) Scheme of IIW-India has been designed to certify the Welding Trainers / Instructors (CWT), firstly to acquaint the participants with the requirements of different welding training courses under IIWIC’s National Welding Training and Certification Scheme (NWTCS) and secondly to fulfil the requirements of different fabrication industries to train the welders either inhouse or through the training institutes. The program is developed to identify gaps in the individuals practical and theoretical competencies and provide suitable refresher training and practice to enable participants to deliver the required standard of training. Finally, there would be sessions to help develop the teaching and soft skills of the individuals to make them more effective as trainers. The scheme provides an opportunity to assess and recognize the job competence of candidates through award of certification.

Scheme – 3: Certified Welding Inspectors’ Scheme

National Welding Inspectors’ Certification Scheme (NWICS) of IIW-India is a comprehensive scheme which provides for examination and certification of personnel seeking to demonstrate their competence and knowledge in the field of welding inspection.

IIWIC operates NWICS for welding inspectors which has been prepared to meet the industries’ demand for certified welding inspectors at three (3) levels – Basic, Standard and Advanced. Welding Inspectors shall be tested and certified as per Certification Schemes (NWICS) detailed in this document. The scheme also complies to the requirements of IS 18224:2023.

The scheme is specifically designed both for new entrants to fabrication industry and for large number of experienced candidates who are conducting welding inspection functions without any formal recognition of their ability. The scheme provides an opportunity to assess and recognize the job competence of candidates through award of certification.

2 Certified Welding Inspector – Standard CWI-S
3 Certified Welding Inspector – Advanced CWI-A

Scheme – 4: Welder Certification Scheme

When any National / International Codes and Standard specifies the requirements for qualification testing of welders for fusion welding, it refers to a qualification standard which provides a set of technical rules for a systematic qualification test of a welder and enables such qualification to be uniformly accepted independent of the type of product, location and examiner or examining body.

IIWIC offers welder certification schemes to individual applicants, or a group of welders engaged in a manufacturing organisation being sponsored by the employer for Welders Certification or as a part of the manufacturing organisation’s requirement to comply with its own QSM or ISO 3834 or special requirement of its customer, at their premises or at IIWIC Authorised Testing Centre (ATC).

IIWIC endeavours to meet the demand of industry for certification of Welders as per national or international code or standard as listed below, or any other equivalent standards as required by the industry:
