1.0 Scheme Name: Certification Scheme for Welding Inspector (Basic)
1.1 Scheme Code: CWI-B
1.2 Scope of Certification:
- Inspection of weld joints before, during and after welding.
- Evaluation and acceptance of weld joints based on Destructive & Non-Destructive test results/reports according to relevant standards.
- Review and preparation of inspection reports and other required documentation.
- General Industrial Safety Practices, Safety relating to welding and cutting, use of PPEs.
1.3 Job and task description:
1.4 Required Competence: Should be able to demonstrate appropriate level of knowledge and skill in welding inspection covering the following:
1.5 Required ability: Normal health, eyesight and colour perception. Minor disabilities which do not affect the performance may be allowed with the discretion of the IIWIC (Example: eyesight corrected with glasses). Visual acuity should be as follows or better:

1.6 Prerequisites:
1.6.1 Prerequisites for access to the course:
- Educational qualification and experience requirements are given in the Table below.
- The candidate should be of minimum 21 years of age on the date of application for certification.
1.6.2 Prerequisites for certification:
- Successfully completed a training course as per the relevant IIWIC guidelines and curriculum in any recognized Training Institute.
- The candidate should be of minimum 21 years of age on the date of application for certification.

1.7 Required code of conduct:
- Considering the importance of quality of welded fabrication and also the consequences of its failure to individual life and society, the candidate should act with complete integrity and in a professional manner in welding inspection and acceptance of the final product.
- The candidate should behave in a professional and disciplined manner which will not affect the safety and security of his fellow members associated in the manufacturing of the final product.
- The candidate’s behaviour towards his/her superiors, peers and sub-ordinates should be in line with organisation’s protocol.
- The candidates shall avoid any conflict of interest with the employer or the client and shall disclose any business association or circumstance that might be so considered.
1.8 Certification criteria/process requirements:
1.8.1 Initial Certification:
- Satisfactory Prerequisites.
- Satisfactory assessment result.
1.8.2 Recertification:
- Satisfactory performance record during the period of certification as reported by employer
- No recorded substantiated complaints at the time of recertification
- Satisfactory assessment result.
- Medical report: Normal health, eyesight and color perception.
1.9 Assessment methods:
1.9.1 Initial certification: Satisfactory outcome as per IIWIC procedure in:
- Written test.
- Viva voce.
- Practical test.
1.9.2 Renewal/Extension:
Application by the candidate subject to reassessment of continued competency by IIWIC during the last 5 years.
1.9.3 Recertification:
Same as 1.9.1
1.9.4 Validity of certification/recertification:
- The certificate is valid for an initial period of five (5) years.
- Maybe renewed for a further period of five (5) years (ref. 1.9.2 above).
- Recertification will be required after ten (10) years of initial certification.
1.10 Surveillance methods/criteria: Not Applicable.
1.11 Criteria for suspending and withdrawing certification:
- Inappropriate use of the Certificate;
- Cessation of the certified activity for 6 (six) months or more, continuously;
- Unethical behaviour;
- Change in certification condition intimated to the certified person but not corrected within the time limit as advised by IIWIC.
1.12 Criteria for changing the scope/level of certification: Not Applicable.
2.0 Recommended training duration: Minimum 48 hours

1.0 Scheme Name: Certified Welding Inspector (Advanced)
1.11 Scheme code: CWI-A
1.2 Scope of certification:
- Inspection of weld joints before, during and after welding.
- Evaluation and acceptance of weld joints based on Destructive & Non-Destructive test results/reports according to relevant standards.
- Preparation of inspection reports.
- General Industrial Safety Practices, Safety relating to welding and cutting, use of PPEs.
1.3 Job and task description:
1) Supervise the activities of Welding Inspectors – Basic level and Standard levels.
2) Independently carry out the following functions:
- All functions carried out by a Welding Inspector – Basic level as given in para 1.3 of Section 1, as well as standard level as given in para 2.3 of Section 2.
- Verify base material and filler material compatibility.
- Witness procedure qualification test including testing of specimen and verify compliance with WPQRs, WPSs.
- Conduct Welders Qualification tests and qualify the same against applicable standards for conventional welding processes (e.g., arc welding processes, steels, aluminium alloys etc.).
- Write Welding Procedures Specifications and Welder Performance Qualification.
- Prepare visual inspection, NDT and destructive testing requirements.
- Identification of weld defects and determination of their acceptability including Radiographic film interpretation for carbon, low alloy and stainless steels.
- Final acceptance and certification that all requirements specified for the weldment have been met.
- Prepare welding inspection quality assurance plans, audit and surveillance plans along with documentation and control requirements.
- Maintenance of comprehensive inspection reports.
- Training and evaluation of Welding Inspectors – Standard level.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to team of Welding Inspectors.
- Understand and ensure compliance of applicable safety requirements.
1.4 Required Competence:
Should be able to demonstrate appropriate level of knowledge & skill in welding inspection covering the following:
- a) Codes and standards;
- b) Raw Material Control and Traceability;
- c) Knowledge of materials and their behaviour during welding;
- d) Conventional welding and cutting processes and equipment;
- e) Safety practices during welding and cutting;
- f) Conventional DT and NDT methods including integrity testing;
- g) Joint types, welding positions and welding symbols;
- h) Welding qualification – procedure and performance;
- i) Detection and interpretation of discontinuities through VT and PT;
- j) Interpretation and evaluation of RT and UT reports;
- k) Review and comment on the quality control documents viz. QAPs, WPSs, PQRs, WPQs, MTCs, DT and NDT reports;
- l) Carry out inspection of welded fabrications before, during and after welding including Dimensional Inspection, PMI and PWHT as per the requirements of relevant standards;
- m) Communicate effectively, verbally and written, and prepare reports;
- n) Details of the theoretical and practical knowledge and competency requirements along with examination procedure and requirements for each of the three levels are given in Annexures I and II, as part of this certification scheme.
1.5 Required ability:

- a) Near Vision – Jaeger J2 or better with correction (not more than 12 months old)
